What is trending for Autumn 2024

by ANTOINETTE STONHAM

Autumn dressing is all about the art of layering your garments, looking elegant and feeling cosy.

I’ve been watching what has been showcased on the different runways across the world for Autumn 2024 and then locating the different styles and colours in different stores here at home.

I’ve chosen the trends that I feel would work in an everyday wardrobe, for the everyday women.

This season is all about steering away from the super oversized jackets that have been trending, for a more structured jacket that is cinched at the waist. Don’t stress if you have invested in an oversized jacket, just cinch it in at the waist with a belt.

Do you remember the low-slung belts worn in the 80s, then again in the 2000s? You guessed it, they are making a comeback and are worn to give shape to a loose dress, over low waisted jeans or a low waisted skirt.

Denim on denim is still trending but if you want to try this look, mix it up with different shades of blue.

Colour for Autumn:

When it comes to colour, we will see all the different shades of green - from rich olive, sage, grass green to fluro. But you’ll also see pops of red, neutrals, brown, muted blue and light lilac.

Styling: When it comes to styling and the outfits that are trending, you have a lot to choose from –

  • Three piece matching suits in plaid or a statement colour
  • Trench coats, cropped cardigans, cropped jumpers and cropped jackets
  • Shear fabrics and soft lace
  • Leather is still trending; anything from skirts, pants, dresses, shorts, long leather coats or make a statement with a leather bomber jacket.
  • Wide leg jeans or pants. If you prefer skinny leg jeans then wear them, you are not going to look dated. I spotted them on the runway.
  • Grandpa knitted vests worn with or without a shirt are a great layering piece,
  • Striped shirts and t-shirts with pants, jeans or a maxi skirt.
  • What better way to add a bit of texture to your outfit and keep yourself warm than with a faux fur.

Footwear and accessories

Boots are my ‘go to’ in the cooler months. This year you will see boots of all kinds including:

  • knee high, kitten heel boots,
  • cowboy boots,
  • block heel ankle boots and more.

If you can’t wear heels you’re in luck, as flats are going to become a huge trend. This will include:

  • pointy toed flats,
  • ballet flats,
  • loafers and
  • Mary Jane shoes.

Bags and Accessories

Almost anything goes in the bags department but think about the colours you are wearing.

  • Slouchy soft leather cross body bags,
  • bucket bags,
  • fluffy bags,
  • oversized bags and
  • small lady like bags

When come to accessories it’s all about layering your necklaces as well. Consider:

  • Shell jewellery of all kinds,
  • large, hooped earrings,
  • make a statement with a cuff,
  • classic, timeless pearls all layered up.
  • Liven up an old jacket with an interesting brooch, or be creative and cluster them up.

These are just a few of the many trends for this season – use them as a guide to help you put your Autumn / Winter outfits together.

Remember ladies dress for you, shop your wardrobe first and created your style.
